Subject headings are terms that are used to convey certain concepts or objects in order to allow users to find an item without an author name or book title and display books of the same or similar topic together in a catalog no matter the location in the physical library. Subject headings are telling a user the "aboutness" of an item, telling them what the major theme of it is and what the author intended to convey. A Librarian must use an authorized master list of subject headings to distribute subject headings to items. School libraries have a number of choices when it comes to the use of subject headings for their libraries (Lesniaski). Those discussed on this website are the Library of Congress Children's Subject Headings and the Sears List of Subject Headings.
